The best of this week: long reads, books, music

What I have been enjoying this week.

Some articles…

  1. Darwin was a slacker and you should be too: Re-read this book excerpt that doesn’t read like an excerpt. I don’t read much pop-science books but I am strongly considering this one.
  2. The literary commitment of Toni Morrison through her rejection letters was a joy to read.
  3. I first heard about litigation terrorism through Jason Hickle’s book The Divide. It was truly maddening reading this Guardian piece.
  4. I have been thinking about the NGO-isation of the work I do and have an article lined up, I had to revisit this evergreen gem by Arudhati Roy in preparation.
  5. Lacks an important race dimension, but this piece about the history of long hair is worth a read

Some books…

  1. I just finished Know My Name by Chanel Miller, which I read as a companion to The Right to Sex by Amia Srinivasan. Both very much worth the read.
  2. I read and finished Ida B Well’s pamphlet Southern Horrors, which is available for free online. It’s a quick read, full of rage, as it should be.
  3. At the start of the week I decided to read more short fiction. One a week, if I can. I started with The Deep End by Robert McCammon. It was so so, at best. I’m trying to cultivate my love for horror fiction, many false starts.

Some music…

I can be hopelessly cliche when it comes to my music taste, as you will soon find. I haven’t listened to music much this week, but here’s three songs I have on repeat, and a bonus playlist

  1. Lullaby by Nickelback. I tend to mostly listen to this track when I’m sad, because it’s sad, but it’s also such a good song!
  2. Crying in the club by Camila Cabello has been on rewind. Everything is okay at home I promise!
  3. Y.B.E by Prodigy. What can I say, get paid!
  4. Making my way through this playlist from the show Couples Therapy. The show wasn’t all that but the music was bomb, will report next week if I have standout favorites
